Researchers in Canada have researched this possibility, and the outcome is... well different than the movies.
To be truthful, few zombie movies end well for the human protagonist. Spoilers below:

Night Of The Living Dead (1968)
Ben survives the night but is shot the following morning, possibly having been mistaken for a zombie, but probably (especially given the "Strange Fruit" imagery that follows) for being black.

Night Of The Living Dead (1990)
In a twist on the above it's Barbra who makes it through the night only to be met with a bullet through the skull on her emergence from the cellar

Dawn Of The Dead (1978)
A slightly odd one as the ending was dramatically changed. After the last of the emergency broadcasts have ceased and the security of the mall has been invaded the protagonists give up hope. In what was originally the shooting script both Peter and Fran killed themselves rather than becoming zombie victims. The final reveal was to be that the helicopter wouldn't have had enough fuel for a getaway anyway. During production though the ending was changed to show Peter having a last minute change of heart and joining Fran in the helicopter. Inferences that this is suicidal as there is still the same amount of fuel in it remain.

Dawn Of The Dead (2004)
At the end of the film our heroes (with the exception of the already dead but still animated Michael who sacrifices himself for the good of the others) get on a boat and sail off into the sunset...

....Unless you watch the credits, in which case they find another boat half way across the lake with a zombified head in a coolbox frantically gnashing and trying to attack them. Shortly after the engine cuts out on their boat and they are left unable to do anything but drift towards an island in the lake. When they arrive there they are met by and swiftly devoured by a horde of ravening zombies.

And so on...

There are zombie movies with happy endings, but these are the exception not the rule (and examples such as Boy Eats Girl don't make it into the pantheons of classic zombie movies), so this Canadian research actually confirms rather than refutes the traditions of zombie movies.

(So, good find is what I meant to say there)

I am still caught up on Robert Smith? Never seen a question mark in someones surname before, but why the heck not!

Sean of the Dead has a happy ending, doesn't it? I always thought so.

Little aside...one of the most prevalent nightmares I has as a child spawned from a commercial for one of the Night of the Living Dead movies. There's a scene with a blue-ish zombie, sort of in a squat, arms spread wide, and he says 'More brains!'

In my nightmare, he was in the kitchen. He never left the kitchen, he just stood there and said 'More brains!' with increasing fervor, slather and gurgles. I'd wake up in a terror and actually have to get up and go confirm that no, he was NOT in the kitchen.

I have to wonder how it's pronounced. Always with a raised intonation, implying a question? Sort of kills a passionate moment, one would think.

Yes, if you count your best friend living in your shed and playing video games in chains a happy ending.

LMFAO!!! I love you!

As far as not being able to survive, I don't think that they took into effect that there are many of us out there who have actually (and quite geekily [is that a word?]) been preparing. It will happen and we will be ready.

I think it must be by everyone he meets.

"Hi, I'm Robert Smith."

"Roberts Smith? Like him in The Cure?"
